I have no choice but to claim this. He is my long, lost twin.

So Canvas Church has a building! We signed a lease this past Monday and we’re starting to demo the place to turn it into a space for adults, kids, community, church services, gatherings, classes, etc. It used to be a bar about 11 years ago and it’s been sitting there ever since!

We are really excited about what’s happening and can’t wait to see how God allows us to use this building for his kingdom! Here’s a pic of what it looks like as of yesterday…

Yeah, we’ve been doing a little demo work. But just wait ’til you see what it looks like when we’re done! There’s a couple more pics up on the Canvas Blog where we’ll be keeping you updated on the progress. Go check it out!

Second Chances…

Everyday I live in the grace of a second chance. I have been freed from having to live a life of shame, guilt and desparation. I didn’t have to work for it. I didn’t have to go to a soup kitchen and serve food to people who hadn’t eaten in days maybe weeks! I didn’t have to extend some tangible grace and let someone merge into my lane in 5 o’clock traffic. I didn’t have to read my bible all the way through and write a theological thesis on Calvinism compared to Wesleyan perspectives. I didn’t have to throw away my secular CDs and stop watching rated R movies. I could go on and on and on but the point is that I didn’t have to do any of these things and more so I could get grace….I was given grace! I do these things (minus the thesis, CDs and rated R movies) because I know what grace looks and feels like. I was given grace. I was given a second chance. And every day that I mess up and start living the very life that I’ve been freed from, without fail….God finds a way to get my attention and messes me up. And once again…I’m left with a shattered version of myself. But everytime, He picks up the pieces and gives me another shot at this.

This video has been going nuts on the internets this past week. I watched it today and I was just overwhelmed with emotion for this guy and seeing the potential for what he could be and how he could give hope to other people in his situation….but it has to start with grace…

There are countless more people out there with his story and are in need of grace. I wish I was in the position to hire him and give him that shot that he’s been working so hard to get and chances are he’ll get that shot because of the popularity of that video. Unfortunately there are some people that will never get that shot. But as followers of Christ, we should make every effort to meet the needs of those around us. Whether it’s a guy with an incredible voice talent looking for a job and a new start at life, or someone who just needs a few quarters to make a phone call or catch a bus, we need to be a people of the second chance. Someone once told me that people who have never been forgiven don’t understand forgiveness. I think its the same with grace. It sucks to think that there are people that don’t understand grace. They’ve never been shown or given grace by anyone enough for them to really grasp the idea. We can change that! As Christians we are called to change that!

I’ve recently found this movement called People of the Second Chance and I love what they’re doing! Go check them out if you haven’t already.

We are the change the world is waiting for.
